The Year 6 English Reading SATS is a single 60-minute paper. Students read a booklet containing two or three texts (fiction and non-fiction) and answer comprehension questions testing retrieval, inference, vocabulary and language skills.
The KS2 Reading SATS tests retrieval (finding information), inference (reading between the lines), summarising, vocabulary in context, and understanding an author's language choices and intent.
The Reading SATS is 60 minutes in total — this includes time to read the texts and answer all questions. There is no separate reading time; students manage their own time across both activities.
